Well in the first week of school our 13 yr old daughter broke out in what was supposedly contact dermatitis. It was all around her hairline and behind her ears. A steroid cream cleared it up within just 2 or 3 applications. At about the same time she started with a rash in her torso.

If I didn't know better I would have thought it was chicken pox as it almost looked like it was blistery at first. Well back to the walk in we go to have it checked because the steroid cream didn't do anything for it and he immediately said she needed to see our family doc and a dermatologist. Monday we went in to see our family doc who also does cosmetic dermatology procedures BTW who looked at it and was baffled.

She immediately said psoriasis but at 13 it was really odd and unusual. She phoned for an emergency referral appt. Talk about shocking and eye-opening at the same time. It's definitely guttate psoriasis which apparently isn't good because of her age and family history. We were also told that because of her age, the rapid onset and spread now all around her hairline and through her scalp and family history of arthritis that she needs to have some serious followup. Strep infections can cause initial onset so we need to have her tested for strep.

We also need to have blood work for the genetic marker for arthritis s as this could be an early warning sign. I am in a state of Grrrr! I was really hoping our 3 kids would escape this arthritis crap. Wow - I can truly appreciate your grrrr moment and really feel for you! Hard to be a parent and know the obstacles and hard to be 13yrs old with such a noticeable problem. My cousin has AS which I know can be very disruptive.

And I have plenty experience dealing with psoriasis but was fortunate to outgrow it. Now I am dealing with atopic dermatitis. My son had these huge red welts, some with pussy centres and it took months to get him into a dermatologist. Finally got it to disappear and remain gone all summer. However, tried to move him to "big boy shampoo" and now he has a fine sandpaper rash that is itchy and the dermatologist won't see him without a new referral as it has been 9 months he will only re-see patients if it has been less than 6 months.

They were so unsympathetic - even when I mentioned that he was only 2yrs old. Problem is, most things that even say they are for sensitive skin still contain very harsh preservatives, fragrance and alcohol. Trying to find a sunscreen was a real treat!!! The only things that have worked so far are Dove Baby Wash unscented and glaxal base cream. Love the glaxal base cream - always worked like a charm!

Fortunately the baby wash can aslo be used as a shampoo but as she is a bit older, likely will need a conditioner and I haven't been able to find one yet. At least that is what I have found has worked so far You certainly have me thinking about you and yoru family and sending a warm hug and best wishes your way as you try to figure it all out and make your way through it! We were given a sample of Oilatum bath and shower oil that we're going to try.

I have to say, after 2 applications of one of the prescription ointments the spots on her torso look so much better. Hoping the best for you and your daughter Usually, this type of psoriasis spontaneously disappears in a few weeks without treatment. In another study of 15 patients, the probability of an individual developing chronic psoriasis within 10 years of a single episode of acute guttate psoriasis was suggested to be about 1 in 3, although further studies with larger numbers of patients are needed to more accurately determine the risk.

Like other forms of psoriasis, guttate psoriasis has the tendency to improve during the summer and worsen during the winter. Once cleared, many patients who experience acute guttate psoriasis usually have limited or no evidence of psoriasis for prolonged periods. Coping video. CSK'sMom wrote: I've had chronic psoriasis since I was 3 or 4 years old I honestly don't remember , and still have it in my 30s. My sister 6 years younger is likewise affected, though not as severely.

Over the years we've been through various treatments, and I can make some recommendations or suggestions if you have specific questions. From a personal perspective grades where the toughest, but by highschool I didn't much care anymore. In retrospect I actually felt worse for my mother, because she felt bad for me I'd still be wearing pants and long sleave shirts in the summer during the last part of public school.

There are a bunch of newer creams and treatments available, and if you are interested I can gather some info from my sister she generally keeps better track of the latest treatments. The current cream I use will smooth out the skin entirely within a week or so assuming some vitamin "sun" is applied as well! When I last purchased, it was not covered by any drug plan, and did require a doctors' prescription. Thanks everyone for their perspectives and advice.

Protopic tacrolimus ointment for anything on her face and Betaderm betamethasone valerate for her scalp. It's taken all the redness and scale off already and many are pretty much gone and what's remaining is just slightly raised now. The few she had around her hairline are gone now too. Her scalp, well it's getting there but definitely isn't healing as fast. The derm. But with everything good comes something not so great, right?

She's now showing signs of hypopigmantation. Well at least she has porcelain skin so one has to really look to notice it, it could be worse but it's definitely going to be noticeable and show in her cheerleading uniform We've been doing lots of reading and have come across a vitamin regimine on psoriasis. Basically it's lots of VitD3, fish oils, etc. We're into our family doctor this coming Friday for a strep culture so we'll talk to her about it and her thoughts. Thankfully our family doctor is more open-minded than many MD's and is open to alternatives.

CSK's Mom - yes, Dovobet is probably the top of the list for topical creams; did your dermatologist mention limited application periods? I was instructed not to take it for more then 45 days at a time, followed by at least a month off granted, I haven't seen a dermatologist in a dozen years, and the Dovobet instruction came from my sisters dermatologist. My sister and I have been through a range of diets including non-dairy, non-meat, various supplements, etc, etc , and neither of us have ever found them to help or hurt.

My uncle had psoriasis that appeared in his 40s and went strict vegan for 6 months and his cleared up - he believes that the diet did the trick, but I have honestly no idea. To this day, when I visit my folks in Florida, I notice a remarkable difference in the single week that I spend there. Hypopigmentation sounds like a good thing to me - not bad!

Usually means you are clearing away legions nicely! For the hypopigmentation, again from personal experience, I've found the sun the best - it seems to create a greater contrast initially because your non-psoriatic skin darkens a bit faster, but the white patches disappear faster as well I typically slather a fair bit of 45SPF on in Florida every year except over the white patches - don't take it as a recommendation, since I have no medical knowledge, it just seems to work for me.

It's unfortunately not the season for that sort of stuff, unless you visit a tanning salon, or have a light box. My sister actually does have a light box, and it was fully covered by insurance my mother was a teacher, so perhaps part of her plan? I'll ask! I used to go to a dermatologist at a teaching hospital when I was a kid, and I recall that it worked fairly well. My wife and I are currently keeping a close eye on our 2 year old; she seems to have slightly drier skin, and I'm always on the lookout - but so far, so good.

Yep, we got all the warnings about the Dovobet. Because she had eczema as a baby we have always headed all the warnings about steroid creams and thinning of the skin. At least it's good to know that the hypopigmentation may not last and may actually tan a bit in the future. Our middle son has a large spot on his back of unknown origin that doesn't tan at all, it's so devoid of pigmentation that his friends joke that he's part albino. All our kids are extremely fair, true blonde's and blue eyed.

Ironically we have a pool and our daughter lives in it all summer, in a bikini! Apparently the vitamin regimen we found has has good results. It stems from the research around the higher incidences north of the equator. The theory is that VitD3 is deficient due to lack of sunshine. It also stems from research surrounding Eskimos in Northern Canada and their diets and skin color they are not fair skinned which is abnormal for natives so far north of the equator.

They have very high VitD levels due to their native diets VitD and fish oils in fish and blubbers and psoriasis is unheard of. In a nutshell the regimen consists of iu of VitD3, mcg of selenium, mcg B12, mcg folic acid, iu flax seed oil, iu fish oil, mg calcium and mg ibuprofen to reduce inflammation. As an alternative one can also opt to take one very good multivitamin containing most of the above , iu of VitD3 and the ibuprofen.

During remissions you can lower the ibuprofen to every other or every 3rd day. We'll see what our doc say but with all the research about the benefits of VitD in the last few year I don't imagine she will be against this I'm typically anti-supplement for the most part, so I'll probably try to chase down what sort of food sources would bring the average diet into those consumption ranges - if it appears straightforward, I may give it a try!

I wouldn't stress too much about the hypopigmentation - both my sister and I have been through it many times, and the areas have always tanned up.

Psoriasis is a condition that most frequently manifests on the skin. Most of these patients have psoriasis that involves their nails. When the nails are involved, the function of the nail unit becomes impaired. The psoriatic nail may not be able to protect the finger or toe, perceive fine touch or sensation, pick up small objects, or scratch. A very high correlation exists between psoriasis of the nail and the troublesome and often deforming psoriatic arthritis. The most common misdiagnosis of psoriasis of the nail is fungal infection.
