Hi there, we use cookies to improve your experience on our website. You can update your settings by clicking the Privacy policy link at the bottom of the page. I want to set the record straight for budget travelers from benevolent cities such as London, Washington DC, or even Madrid, which offer all-day or partially-free access to museums. In NYC, most museums provide 'suggested admission' prices.

Really, a suggested donation. You pay what you want. So, if you think avoiding a nasty look from the ticket office is worth 20 bucks, go ahead and pay full price admission at these spots, but if you think cultural treasures should be democratically shared with the public, pay ONE CENT and make a statement with your travels.

On the other hand, very few public museums have any kind of acquisition program anymore, because they cannot compete with the endowments of private museums. For example, the Getty Museum can buy whatever it wants, at any cost, and any quantity. They effectively make the market. The Met cannot make a major purchase without a major fund raising effort.

Conservation efforts on vast collections also cost millions annually. You decide if this is democracy. A less douchy approach is to go on a free night and pay a little something or a free night sponsored by a corporation, like Friday nights at MOMA sponsored by Target. My experience has been that most NYC area museums, zoos etc. These are primarily designed for school groups, scouts etc.

Most of these places are government supported and have an education-related mission which includes making their exhibits available to those of limits resources. The Bronx Zoo, for example has a "suggested donation day" commonly known as a free day," every Wednesday. Nothing "douchy" or nefarious about it. The OP implies a similar policy is in effect at some places every day.

If that's the case, I've never heard of it. I pay more than a penny because I believe the people who work there, from curators to janitors, should have jobs and earn wages for their work. However, I do tend to prorate based on how long I plan to be there. Still these places are taxpayer supported for a reason.

Most travelers are spending X on lodging, Y on food, and Z on transportation and sundries. You already are supporting our local economy. You are already supporting our hotel clerks, our sandwich shop employees etc. If saving you and me a few bucks on museum admission is my only cost, then I don't mind. Welcome to New York. They can't charge a set admission as a condition for receiving the taxpayer funds, however, these funds do not cover their full operating costs.

Here's a pie chart that shows just how small a portion of income these funds are. The city has been giving less, so admissions is becoming a bigger factor for covering the gap. I'm ok with paying less, but travelers should still support them with more than a penny. It's NYC--if you can afford to sleep and eat, you can afford a buck or two for the museum. Free its last hour 4: There is actually a lawsuit in the works over the Met's "voluntary admission fee.

New York City agreed to the museum's request in to charge an admission fee - so long as the amount was left up to individuals and the signage reflected that. These museums are not publicly funded. They are publicly supported to a minor degree, as the pie chart clearly shows. Taxpayer funding is decreasing every year, just like so many other formerly public institutions.

The tourist who doesnt make some effort to pay a reasonable fee is stealing services. Nothing costs a penny anymore and everything is worth at least a few dollars. Many people go just to say they have been, so pay for the right, and pay salaries, maintenance, conservation, acquisition, operating costs etc etc. Yes, of course, a penny is a bit extreme, but nothing wrong with a dollar or two.
