I recently had a 3-year-old Desert Museum paloverde tree die. It flowered beautifully this spring and looked fine for several months. It began to lose its leaves in August and blew over a few weeks later. The root, which appeared dead, broke off just below ground level. That it started losing its leaves in August suggests inadequate watering. Thanks to a wet spring, your tree did fine, but when the weather heated up, it may not have gotten enough water.

We love visiting this museum, it is about 30 minutes from our home and our Inn and guests are always letting us know how much they love going there. We have plenty of Coupons to hand out too. Anything and everything you ever wanted to know about plant and animal life in Arizona and the Sonoran Desert can be found here at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum which is mostly outdoor exhibits. Especially noteworthy: Get there when it opens to see the large mammals mountain lion, bear, etc.

Wear the most comfortable hiking shoes you own, since many paths are unpaved and some are slightly hilly, although most are wheelchair accessible. Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are a must. Note that, since this is the desert, the late afternoon temperatures may be up to degrees F higher than early morning.

Go prepared, and you will have the adventure of a lifetime. This is an open air museum of wildlife found in the region. Some walking with down and up hills. The docents are very knowledgeable and helpful. Best to visit in cooler weather. Where else can you walk in a hummingbird habitat and see all the species and their nests. I live in Tucson, and love to go out to visit at least once a year. It is NOT a zoo. For those who go out in the summer, shame on you.

The animals are not as stupid as some of the tourists. It's too hot at midday To see the desert animals in their natural setting is great. The museum has done an excellent jog of minimizing enclosures. Great walk. As a resident of Tucson, I'm glad to share this gem in the desert with family and friends from out of town or even new residents. It is an extraordinary display of desert wildlife and plant life, topography and history. Be sure to allow lots of time to explore the whole "museum" - much of it is outdoors so if you're there in the summer, plan to go early or late and wear hats and sunscreen, Plus many of the animals are out during those times, not in the extreme heat of the day.

There are educational opportunities to meet wildlife - don't miss the Raptor show when available. The hummingbird exhibit is one of my favorites as is the bird aviary. Docents will often have displays on exhibit around the museum. During the summer, there are often late night Saturday events. Flights Vacation Rentals Restaurants Things to do.

Everyone enjoyed this outing - both parents and a 14 and 10 year old. Perfect amount of displays and walking and beautiful atmosphere. Very well organized and a bit pricey but worth it. Does get hot in the sun so go early. It has been years since we had the opportunity to visit Tucson. Our first stop was the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum. We arrived with a cold front so the wind was blowing 30 to 40 mph and there was so much dust in the air. Hi Lynn, Thank you for taking the time to write us a review.

Longtime Southern Nevadans who love the Mojave Desert nevertheless often develop a desire to explore other arid landscapes. Typically, they dream of the Sonoran Desert, whose scenery may have inspired them to live in the Southwest. An excellent place to fulfill that desire is in and around Tucson, Ariz. There are dozens of places to take in the flora and fauna, but two places stand out: Just as our Mojave Desert has its signature plant in the Joshua tree, the Sonoran Desert has its saguaro cactus Carnegiea gigantea , a plant so distinctive, it long ago became a symbol for the entire West. The saguaro is the largest cactus in the United States, with fully mature plants reaching heights of 40 feet or more. These slow growers may reach only 2 feet tall in 30 years, and it may take 50 to years for a plant to grow its first arm. One of the best places to see these magnificent plants up close is at Saguaro National Park, just outside of Tucson. This park is unique as it has two districts: Whichever district you visit, you will be immersed in a Sonoran Desert environment dominated by the mighty saguaro.
